Team Description
The Charlotte Central School World Language program has two main objectives: to develop proficiency in the four basic areas of listening, speaking, reading, and writing, and to increase the students' knowledge and appreciation of the diverse cultures of different countries. The second goal, increasing cultural awareness, is incorporated into the program through audio-visual materials, guest speakers, e-pals, and class discussions, as well as through integrated interdisciplinary units and projects.
Students in kindergarten through fourth grade are introduced to Spanish through thematic units, developmentally appropriate content, songs, stories, and games. Each successive year builds student vocabulary and ability to use the language. The emphasis is on oral proficiency and communication. In addition, the Spanish program strives to strengthen student understanding of academic curriculum through collaboration and integration with classroom teachers.
In kindergarten, students are introduced to basic vocabulary, and to the pronunciation of Spanish words. With assistance, kindergarteners are able to identify basic concepts, and to orally reproduce words. In first and second grade, more vocabulary concepts are introduced, and students are expected to answer basic questions, as well as to independently produce words and phrases. In third and fourth grade, students tackle more complex linguistic skills. Grammar, Spanish phonetics, and writing are introduced in these grades. The goal is that by the end of fourth grade, students feel comfortable speaking AND writing in Spanish. In all grades, songs, skits, role plays, and artwork are regularly included as a showcase of student learning.
In the fifth grade students alternate between French and Spanish. At the conclusion of the school year, fifth grade students will choose to continue in either French or Spanish. This will allow three solid years of in-depth practice and preparation for high school.
In sixth grade, students study French or Spanish. We concentrate on listening, understanding, and responding. Sixth graders learn to ask and answer questions on such topics as name, date, weather, and time. Vocabulary expands to include numbers, colors, the schoolroom, food, body parts, subject pronouns, and holidays. Sentence structure is in the present tense. Student evaluation is based on participation, homework, use of French or Spanish in class, projects, and quizzes.
The seventh and eighth grade course uses the book Allez, Viens, which emphasizes communication. The students learn how to invite, inform, inquire, exclaim, agree, disagree, compliment, and express emotions and feelings. The necessary grammar and vocabulary are presented in culturally authentic situations that appeal to young people. Student evaluation is based on participation, homework, project grades, vocabulary and spelling quizzes, and exams on structure. Oral tests and quizzes are given frequently throughout the year as well.
