Team Description

 The Voyagers team consists of two first grade classes that will loop to second grade with the same teacher. Mrs. Filardi and Ms. Lubic work together. Using the Responsive Classroom model, we will work to develop a strong sense of community that includes our families.

 Guiding Principles

 Supporting individual learning styles and needs

 Celebrating diversity, character and self esteem

 Building community across the Voyager Team by combining classes for various learning activities

 Integrating state and local standards and grade level expectations in an interdisciplinary approach

 Providing a solid base of fundamental learning skills

 Creating open lines of communication with families

Developmentally appropriate academic skills will be taught using a variety of tools such as:

 Math: Everyday Math, computation, problem solving

 Spelling: Word Study, Fundations

 Reading: Guided Reading, Literature-based books, Read Aloud, Fundations, Reading Workshop

 Writing: Writing Workshop, Daily Oral Language, Portfolio Genres

 Penmanship: print, cursive  (second grade)

Science: Inquiry-Based exploration of themes

Social Studies: Integrated thematic units

Technology: Type to Learn, Kidspiration, PowerPoint, Word, Paint, Encarta Kids, EDM Games, Publisher

 Field trips to enhance student learning

Student performance reporting

Parent's Role:

Support your child‘s learning

Read to or with your child and encourage your child to read independently
