At Charlotte Central School, art is taught as an academic subject. The acquisition of skills, techniques, and processes and work with different media are also used to understand art‘s historical and cultural context. Where possible and appropriate, art activities are coordinated or integrated into classroom studies.
Art is a reflection of a student‘s learning process and his or her interpretation of the world. It is a visual record of feelings, reasoning, and development, conveying a clearer image and more complete understanding of the whole child. At all levels, problem-solving, critical thinking, creative expression, self-reflection and evaluation are emphasized.
In grades K-3 emphasis is on exploring materials, techniques, and processes and learning to understand, discuss, and appreciate the work of others. Care of materials and the development of an art vocabulary is also emphasized. Students receive art instruction in a fully equipped art room once a week. Reports on student growth and learning go home in January and June. In addition, parents have many opportunities to view student work throughout the year. In grades four and five, emphasis continues on self-expression and exploration of materials. Students are introduced to specific art techniques and skills and are encouraged to select techniques, processes, and materials appropriate to a project assignment. Students share and discuss their own work and the work of others in small groups. Pre- planning and organizing ideas and choosing appropriate materials are also emphasized. Students receive art instruction once a week for one hour. In grades six, seven and eight, students are expected to complete a series of projects based on an historical culture, time, or on the work of an artist, or an important art concept. Students will attend art classes weekly for 50 minutes. Report cards based on the VT and national art standards. Student learning opportunities develop from a written art curriculum and are based on the National Standards for Art Education and on Grade Expectations for the Vermont Framework of Standards and Learning Opportunities. Art shows, evening showcases, and school-wide displays give students many opportunities to see their own work and the work of others. Artist-in-residence programs and visits to area galleries and museums enhance opportunities for students to learn from practicing artists and from primary works of art.
