The curriculum for the elementary Spanish program covers a wide variety of topics, themes, and content. Instruction is given primarily in Spanish. What is learned in the program is tied into national foreign language standards, as well as the standards of other content areas.Through integration and collaboration with classroom teachers, the Spanish program strives to strengthen and elaborate on students’ understanding of CCS’ classroom curriculum. In addition, cultural components play a large role in the designing of curriculum.
Students are introduced to the Spanish language in first grade. The goals of this first year are to create comfort with the Spanish language, to introduce basic vocabulary such as numbers and colors, and to introduce pronunciation of words. With assistance, students are able to identify basic concepts, reproduce Spanish words, and sing songs.
In second grade, students build and elaborate on listening and speaking skills developed in first grade. More vocabulary concepts are introduced, and students are expected to answer basic questions, as well as to independently produce words and phrases. Songs and skits are regularly included as a showcase of student learning. Some themes at these levels include: monarchs and Mexico, fruits and vegetables, and global fairy tales.
In third and fourth grade, students continue to develop their oral skills by tackling more complicated vocabulary and studying more complex linguistic skills. Grammar and Spanish phonetics are also introduced in these grades. Starting in third grade, children begin to reproduce written forms of words. The goal is that by the end of fourth grade, students feel comfortable speaking AND writing in Spanish. In these upper elementary grades, students will also regularly use role plays and musical selections as ways to practice and polish their oral Spanish skills. Previous themes explored at these levels include: the world cup, legends of Peru, and weather.
