MUSIC PROGRAM

Welcome to the Music Webpages

Mrs. Ledoux's Page

Every student in grades 1-5 receives general music instruction during two 35-minute periods per week. All Kindergarten students receive one 35-minute period per week.

”Music is for everyone” is a statement integrated into all aspects of music instruction at CCS.  All children can learn to sing and are encouraged to find their voices through repertoire from our Vermont culture, traditional American and African-American folksongs and play parties as well as music from other cultures around the world.  It is from these sources that the elements of music are learned in a sequential format.  Music is a language.  It is our goal to have our students strive to be as comfortable with this language as they are with their native tongue.

Before beginning a music literacy program, three readiness skills should be in place:

1)                  Comfortable and accurate singing skills

2)                  Comfortable and accurate moving skills

3)                  Expressive sensitivity

Once these skills are in place, the development of music literacy follows much the same process as that which naturally develops our own speaking, reading and writing skills.

Students will learn to understand music by ear before they learn to read and write music to ensure that the ear and musical mind play an active role in the processing of music ideas.

Students will enjoy playing and improvising on simple rhythm instruments, learning to move both creatively and with structure, creating pieces of music and listening to great works of art.  They will also learn to evaluate music and music performances.  Other art forms will be integrated into the music curriculum.  Music is often integrated with subject areas being studied in your child‘s regular classroom. When time permits, some children will have the opportunity to participate in the Vermont MIDI Project‘s  website on the Internet where they can share their compositions with other music students throughout the state and receive feedback from professional composers. This is an exciting opportunity and we are extremely lucky that CCS is a participating school!

Music is an important part of your child‘s complete and well-rounded development.  You are invited to contact me with any questions regarding your child‘s musical growth and are encouraged to visit your child‘s music classroom at any time.
