The expressive arts at Charlotte Central School include choral and instrumental music, visual art, and physical education/creative movement. Teachers of these subjects work together as a team with the belief that all students need a broad education in the arts as preparation for life as an educated person and as a contributing member of society.
The arts have both intrinsic and instrumental value. They have an integrity and worth on their own and yet can be used to achieve many other purposes. The arts play a role in creating culture, history, and civilization, and as such play a role in helping students understand other areas of study in their education. In addition, the arts help them understand the contributions made to the development of civilization as a whole. They encourage students to engage their whole brain in learning through self-expression, communication, and personal fulfillment. The arts encourage diverse thinking because there is no one right answer. They encourage problem-solving and critical thinking. The study of the arts encourages focus, patience, self-discipline, and perseverance. The arts provide important non-verbal communication. They offer many opportunities for the development of gross and fine motor skills. Ultimately, the arts prepare students for making their own contributions to civilization and culture.
With the study of the arts, all students should be able to communicate with the knowledge and skill in the basic vocabulary, materials, tools, techniques, and processes, and intellectual methods of each of the arts disciplines.
Charlotte Central School expressive arts teachers believe all students should have access to a stimulating, comprehensive art program that encourages in depth experiences and provides opportunity for sequential development of skills, processes, and techniques, with the belief that all students are capable of learning to develop their own talents, and interests.

School base instruction on both the state and national standards for the arts, and use them as the basis for both curriculum development and assessment. Assessment occurs on a regular basis in a variety of ways that may include demonstration of skill development, understanding of historical and cultural background, ability to reflect on and critique one’s own work and the work of others.
The arts emphasize a positive approach to work, a passion for subject matter, and care of materials. The arts are interactive and require involvement in a wide variety of learning opportunities. As a result, attendance in the arts classes and productive use of time are also part of assessment.
Students are assessed on their approach to work, participation, and completion of work assigned. At middle level, students achieving the highest two levels will earn honors when their arts grades are added to their other grades.
