"I wish I could spend more time with each of my students, one-on-one, to learn more about each of them as individuals. My schedule doesn't allow for this on a regular basis. I am so glad that we now have the Mentor Program." CCS middle school teacher
The CY Mentoring Program matches students in grades 5 through 8 with adult mentors from the community. Students and their mentors meet for one hour per week, during school time or school property. Adult mentors are carefully screened and trained by Carol Conard, Mentor Program Coordinator and Patti Tomashot, middle school guidance counselor. Parental permission is required for student participation in the program.
Our school has wonderful resources for mentors and mentees. They can spend time cooking, reading, working on the computer, playing a game, playing a sport, working in the wood shop, or working in the art room, etc.
One hour per week can make a big difference. Students can feel in charge of how they spend their time with their mentor, feel listened to and valued. Middle school can present challenges socially and academically; having a mentor can make a world of difference to a child.
Mentors have a chance to give attention to a student, and give to the community and school by spending one-on-one time with a student. Their relationship evolves into a special time to pursue a mutual interest, learn together, and have fun.
For more information, contact Carol Conard at 425-2271 or email.
