Team DescriptionTeam Members:  Colleen Brady, Peggy Coutu, and Kris Gerson
 
Our community is comprised of

Mrs. Brady, Mrs. Gerson and Mrs. Coutu with students in grades 1 & 2.
 
We value an atmosphere that supports individual growth, as well as a true sense of community.   In addition we are committed to the following: 

  • a classroom that fosters creativity and exploration
  • opportunities to take risks with both academic and social growth
  • reflective  time  with  teachers,  parents,  and  child  to  focus  on  the individual learning process 
  • teaching, celebrating, and reinforcing the values on which good character and self-esteem are based 

What will children learn? They will learn: 

  • that each child is an essential member of a family-like community 
  • how to use and extend opportunities for creativity and exploration
  • skills to become:
    • independent learners 
    • active learners
  • a love and enjoyment of learning 
  • developmentally appropriate academic skills utilizing the  following programs:
    • math  -  Everyday  Math,  problem-solving  strategies  and  supplemental materials
    • reading  -  balanced  reading  program  including  instruction  in  phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension  and spelling
    • writing - foundational skills in written expression and grammar usage
    • penmanship - manuscript print and cursive
    • technology - basic operations and concepts of technology
    • science – inquiry-based themes
    • social studies – integrated thematic units–
    • how  to  reach  beyond  oneself  and  deliberately  contribute  to  the betterment of the whole
  • values upon which good character and self-esteem are based
  • how to celebrate one another and all
  • an acceptance  and  appreciation  of  the  differences  and  challenges  of others

How will children learn? They will learn through:

  • role models (teacher and peer)

  • cooperative groups
  • group meetings
  • individualized learning experiences
  • integrated thematic units
  • opportunities presented for independence and risk taking
  • learning experiences supporting multiples intelligences and learning styles
